Round 8 v Hutchins at Uni  29/08/2020

It was great to see a strong turnout at the weekend's matches at Uni. While the Lady 'Bows were able to record a valuable win over North Hobart, the mens' teams unfortunately were accounted for by two hungry and polished Hutchins sides.

MATCH REPORT:
Not the result we were after with Hutchins retaining the Southee-Palfreyman Cup by a comfortable 29 points. We were outplayed in most areas on the ground. Riley Gunther played arguably his best game for the club in the middle of the ground having 20+ touches and 16 tackles, Conor Barling was exceptional in the Ruck against an experienced Cleary and Blake Waight, Simon Vandervelde and Josh Fogarty made solid contributions. Liam Kendall held Claude Alcorso well in a disciplined tagging display for one and a half quarters until he was knocked out cold in a sickening clash. We wish Liam all the best with his recovery.

We will look to bounce back this week against St Virgils who pushed DOSA last week so they will be full of confidence. Get along and support the boys at the Newtown Bike track.   Ginger Brown Players Player: Connor Barling    Droop Jones Tackle Ward: Riley Gunther

MATCH REPORT:
University burst out of the blocks kicking the first three goals but by half time Hutchins were two goals up and then the game stayed even until he finish. Chip Pointon kept up his good form and Sean Worker was excellent on ball. The backline performed well Adam, Jimmy and Cappa  strong for the whole game. The boys know we need to improve and will refine their game over the last two matches ready for the finals.

MATCH REPORT:

Wonderful day for our women at the Uni Oval last Saturday. Terrific team effort, particularly to come from behind at half-time. Very few teams in the SFLW give up a lead, but once we increased our work rate after half-time, the game opened up a bit and you were good enough to prevail. Remie finished off some very good support work in the last quarter to slam on 2 precious goals to stop North Hobart in their tracks.

If we learnt anything, it was that you can’t take your foot off the gas at any time. North Hobart, to their credit, bounced back in the second quarter with 2 strong goals after we dropped our work-rate. Fortunately, we responded well and dragged back the lead. We also had 11 scoring shots to 3, so at least we created opportunities. In tough contested ball situations, we kept our feet.

We play Huonville next week; they are the most improved side from 2019 and will be a tough opponent. Thanks to you all for your effort last Saturday – it was a nice win to grab against good opposition.  Belles Player of the Week: Charlotte O'Neill
