 2008 TUFC President’s Report

Following a number of consecutive seasons with two highly competitive sides, The University Football Club saw a significant loss of senior players at the end of the 2007 season, primarily for travel and career reasons.  A handful of players also moved on to play in higher leagues, a move supported by the Club.  The Club did not proactively recruit established senior players from other clubs, instead focussing on attracting new young players.  This was seen as important in building a strong players base for the future at University, which has always experienced high player turnover.

The Club appointed John Barwick as Senior Coach for the 2008 season, following an excellent contribution in the Bench Coach role in 2007.  The Club was really impressed by John's ability to mentor and educate young players, and develop a consistent strategy and game plan.  These factors were seen as critical, given the inevitable "rebuilding" season that 2008 represented.

A solid pre-season followed, with a core group training hard.  Overall player numbers increased as we started, meaning many players had an abbreviated pre-season.  This slow build up clearly showed in the early rounds, as both sides were comprehensively beaten each weekend.

The two University sides displayed some better form in bursts throughout the year, with the Seniors pushing the more fancied St Virgils all the way on a couple of occasions and being overrun after outplaying Hutchins for the majority of the day at Queenborough.  Reserves went one better on the same day, knocking off the Beans for their much-celebrated and only victory for the season.

The Club's lack of depth was more evident on occasions when the bigger bodies, greater experience and cleaner skills of some opposition sides resulted in heavy losses.  Repeat injuries to key players throughout 2008 also did little to help both sides settle and play to their game plan consistently.

Despite a fairly unsuccessful year in terms of wins, the Club believes it has discovered a number of great young players, and is looking forward to seeing them contribute to greater on-field success in the near future.

Congratulations to the Club's 2008 Best and Fairest award winners - David Welch (seniors) and Sam Loader (reserves).  Well done to all players who passed milestones during the season.

As always, there were individuals who helped make the place tick. Matthew "Noodles" Martin (Vice President) made an enormous contribution to the running of the Club on a daily basis, and deserves particular recognition.  James Hoult as Secretary also did a power of work, along with committeemen Shaun Suitor, Gavin Shaw, Julian Sidebottom, Paul Brooks and Mal Reeve.

Special thanks go to Coaches John Barwick and Gavin Shaw, trainer Sam Begin and runner Bill Trethewie.  As is the case every year, the Supporter's Group assisted in many ways, including the weekly raffle and running the Bar on match days.

Once again, Phil "Member" Guest did a magnificent job administering the Club's website, www.tufcrainbows.com.

A massive thankyou to the major sponsors of the TUFC for Season 2008: Jackson Motor Company, Village Dry Cleaners, Cascade Hotel, SoHo, Cascade Breweries, and Supporters Group Sponsors.  The Club is hugely appreciative of your generosity again in 2008.

Congratulations to John “Stinky” Kenny and the rest of the OSFA Exec, as well as the other competing clubs, for another great season.  Countless individuals have helped make the year run well and the TUFC recognises and appreciates their efforts.

Finally, a special thanks to all players and supporters of University Football Club in 2008.  All of you dug deep in a challenging year on the field to ensure that the Club did not go backwards.

See you all again in 2009.

 Troy Stewart

Thanks again for your support in 2008!

2008 Senior Coach’s Report

‘ANNUS HORRIBILIS’ best describes what proved to be a tough year at the football office.  However, with every negative, certainly we found a number of positives heading towards Season 2009; the strength of character shown by the 37 players (and support staff) who were still standing at Round 20, including James Hoult & Sean Suitor who each played 2 games of hard competitive footy to help both the Reserves & Seniors teams in what was the last game of the season, is to be commended.

After the Club enjoyed a high level of success playing Finals football in 2006 & 2007, season 2008 was going to be a seriously challenging year with the loss of many key senior players from the Club.  Another positive is that our past captain Cameron Burgess achieved personal success in winning selection to play with the ‘Devils”, representing Tasmania at the highest State level.  In summary, our season unfolded in the following way:

 THE HIGHLIGHTS

 ·        Pre-season started in late November and recommenced mid January with player numbers reaching 62 by Season start, eventually peaking in the 80’s heading into winter.

·        Greg Farmilo & Gavin Shaw as co-captains led the playing group with energy and gave “hands-on” direction at training and on game-days.

·        Travelling to Oatlands and beating the Central Hawks on their own “dung-heap” followed by a good victory against the Glenorchy U/19 Premiership Team at KGV.

·        Strong “winnable” games against Richmond at Richmond in Round 2 losing by 16 points,   and St Virgils in Round 5 at New town, losing by 22 points and again in Round 20 losing by 21 points when our backs were to the wall.

·        50+ players experienced playing senior football with 20+ players becoming regular senior players; the stand-out developing players being Rob Hill, Jules Sidebottom, Stuart Cooper, Hamish Scott, Charles Spencer, John Saner, James Hoult, Sean Hamilton, Scott Rolls, Sam Loader & Rob Oakley.

·        New talented players joining the Club including Ben Johnson (Awarded Best 1st Year Player), Pat McIver, Nick Marson, Alex Saunders, Heath Griggs, Jarrod Allen and the irrepressible Nathan Brereton.

·        David Welch being promoted to Captain; also selected in the OSFA Team of the Year and capping off an outstanding season winning the Club B&F.

·        Jules Damasena being promoted to Assistant Coach owing to his on-field inspirational play and leadership attributes.

·        The courageous return by Paul Brooks and Mick Gowans to the field of battle after suffering serious injury.

·        The terrific Team Spirit that evolved in the face of adversity as evidenced in celebrating our end of year B&F Count & Trophy Presentation Night.

THE LOWLIGHTS

·        Creating our own infamous history in not winning a senior game in 2008

·        Being thrashed in Round 1 by OHA to the tune of 154 points; an early message that we were in for a very tough year with 19 more rounds to come.  Reducing the margin in Round 11 to 82 points to the eventual Premiers showed a level of improvement.

·         Losing those three “win-able” games to Richmond & St Virgils.

·        Devastating serious and/or Season-ending injuries to key senior players including Paul Brooks, Michael Gowans, Todd Stevenson, Cody Dineley (B&F winner in 2007), Hamish Scott, Martin Dineley, Dan Blacklow, Momtchil “Chilli” Paritchev, Clint Rottier & Nick Whittle (for all 20 Rounds).

·        Player numbers diminishing to the bare 37 by Round 20.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

·        Gavin Shaw for his enduring commitment in coaching the Reserves Team and leading the Senior Team as captain until suffering a knee injury.

·        David Welch & Jules Damasena for their loyal and hard-working leadership.

·        Boston for his passion & medical expertise. Also, for his initiative in building a “Medical Team” of reliable students to care for the Players in his absence.

·        The hawk Matthew “Noodles” Martin for his reliability, loyalty, friendship and sheer passion for “the love of the game”

·        Bill “Farmer” Trethewie for his integrity, energy, unconditional support and mateship.  A legendary bloke.

·        Troy Stewart for his relentless pursuit of achieving success both on and off the ground.  Club President, Major Sponsor, Social Club DJ & Bouncer (he’s a big bloke John Morey).  All things to all people who can actually “play the game”. Keep “chipping away” champ; failure is not an option.

I certainly look forward to being a part of the imminent success of the rampaging rainbows in 2009.
