Dear Supporter,

Welcome to the final 2007 update newsletter for the TUFC Supporters Group.

In this edition, all winners of awards from the Presentation Night on October 6th are included. Weekly Supporter’s Group Lottery draw results are below, and results of the matches are also attached.

An eventful end to the season saw the Club fall short of another flag at either level. However, both Senior and Reserves sides again figured prominently in Finals action. The Seniors were knocked out by DOSA in a Preliminary Final reversal from 2006. The Reserves side turned around some mediocre late-season form to reach the Grand Final where they were narrowly defeated by Hutchins.

The AGM for 2007 will be held at the Clubrooms on Friday November 9th, commencing at 7.00pm.
As usual, the Annual Report and Financial Report will be tabled and later distributed to Supporters Group members who have indicated a preference to receive the reports.

Well done to coaches Craig Haremza, John Barwick, and Steffen Waight on a solid season. Craig has finished his coaching after 2 years at the reigns, and all involved with the Club would no doubt agree that he has done an first class job.

Acknowledgement and thanks should be extended to the TUFC Executive Committee and General Committee for a job well done in 2007.  A particular thankyou to Phil “Member” Guest for all the work put into the excellent TUFC website - www.tufcrainbows.com

And finally, thanks again to you, the members of the Supporters Group. The contribution you make to the Club is genuinely appreciated, and helps maintain the TUFC as a successful and viable member Club of the OSFA.

See you in 2008!

Round 18

Seniors:

St Virgils   1.2   5.11   11.12   14.14  (98)

University 2.5    4.6     6.9       9.12   (66)

Goals: L. Webb 2, C. Burgess 2, N. Whittle, T. Stevenson, S. Suitor, M. Gowans

Best: J. Bercheree, S. Bouwman, P. Brooks, M. Gowans

Summary: University started the stronger of the two sides, with the midfield creating opportunities for the forwards. However, things turned around in the second quarter as St Virgils took control. Their inaccuracy kept Uni in the game, but in the third term, another lacklustre effort from the Rainbows blew any realistic chance of a comeback victory. The final quarter was a case of each side going through the motions, with St Virgils denying Uni the points in a game expected to be won, and damaging the chance to build momentum heading into September. James Bercheree and Sam Bouwman were solid in the back half, while Paul Brooks provided plenty of rebound run.

Goals: A. Hinkley 2, T. Stevenson, C. Burgess, C. Dinely, M. Gowans

Best: M. Gowans, N. Whittle, D. Willcock, C. Dinely, C. Haremza, J. Damasena

Summary: A dark day for the Senior side, they were never in the game. Hutchins showed superior skills and intent at the ball. This helped set up a huge halftime lead into which Uni never looked likely to make inroads. Big men Mick Gowans and Nick Whittle had plenty of opportunities to mark a kick behind play, given the ball relentlessly kept being pumped down there. Dean Wilcock and Jules Damasena also battled  hard against the odds in defence.

Goals: S. Bouwman 3, T. Stevenson 3, C. Dinely 3, G. Shaw 2, M. Gill 2, J. Damasena 2, L. Webb, C. Haremza

Best: C. Burgess, D. Wilcock, G. Farmilo, P. Brooks, G. Shaw, J. Magee

Summary: Uni matched DOSA around the ball in a tight first half, and contained its gun forward line effectively. The game opened up in the third quarter, largely to DOSA’s advantage. However, the Rainbows continued to compete strongly and play attacking footy, with Dean Wilcock, Ziggy, and Cam Burgess getting lots of ball. In the final quarter, Uni ran forward at every opportunity. Marking targets Mick Gowans, Matt Gill and Sam Bouwman dominated the aerial contests, providing the impetus for a memorable victory – the last-minute sealer being a miracle goal off the boot of Cody Dinely from the boundary.

Semi Finals

Seniors:

Richmond  3.4   6.6    8.7    12.10    (82)

Goals: M. Gowans 5, D. Welch 5, G. Shaw 4, S. Suitor 2, M. Gill 2, S. Bouwman 2, C. Haremza 2, G. Farmilo, A. Hinkley, M. Evans

Best: N. Whittle, D. Welch, D. Bearman, G. Shaw, A. Hinkley, J. Damasena

Summary: A lot of feeling existed between these sides, and both outfits were hard at it in an even first half. The Rainbows simply blew Richmond off the park in the second half, as the Blues started to lose focus and target the man. A massive 11 goal last term sealed a comprehensive victory for Uni in a match featuring the significant return of David Welch. Welchy was electric, and ended with five goals amid a dominant along with Mick Gowans and Gav Shaw. Ziggy even kicked a couple, while Nick Whittle and Dan Bearman were great around the ground.

 Seniors:

DOSA         6.1   12.3    19.4   21.6  (132)
University  2.2    3.4      6.5     9.10   (64)

Goals: D. Welch 2, L. Webb, D. Wilcock, M. Gill, T. Stevenson, S. Bouwman, C. Dinely, G. Shaw

Best: P. Brooks, S. Suitor, D. Wilcock, J. Damasena, D. B earman, A. Hinkley

Summary: The Rainbows entered the Prelim against DOSA with some encouraging form behind them, having demolished Richmond the week before, and pipping DOSA in the final round. However, this game began very differently, with DOSA asserting their game early, moving the ball cleanly and converting their chances in front of goal. Uni appeared to miss the aerial dominance of the previous fortnight. The theme continued right through until three quarter time, after which both sides played out the match. Paul Brooks rounded out an inspirational Finals campaign with another fine performance, while Dean Wilcock competed hard as always, and Jules Damasena and Shaun Suitor worked tirelessly to set up opportunities. A disappointing end the Rainbow’s season, and a lost chance to have another crack at the Beans in the Grand Final.
Throughout the year, the side had played some scintillating football in bursts, but will look for greater consistency in 2008 to convert their undeniable talent into genuine rewards.

Reserves:

University    4.4   8.7   13.10  14.12  (96)
DOSA          4.4   5.5     6.5      7.6     (48)

Goals: C. Jones 5, R. Hill 3, C. Spencer 2, T. Stewart 2, M. Hawkins

Best: R. Hill, S. Cooper, D. Whishaw, C. Spencer, C. Jones, B. Pitt

Although lacking height and size in comparison to their DOSA counterparts, University started solidly, showing great intent at the contest. Their superior running game and fitness in the pressured finals atmosphere showed through in the second and third quarters, running DOSA off their legs and using the ball well on the long Richmond ground. DOSA had few answers as both sides played the game out in the final term. The Rainbows had done well to comprehensively turn the tables on a side that had the better of them all season, and avenge the loss in the corresponding 2006 Prelim Final.

 Grand Final

Reserves:

Hutchins   1.4   8.6   9.9   11.12 (78)

University 3.3  4.5    6.7    10.8  (68)

Goals: T. Stewart 3, G. Shaw 2, C. Jones 2, M. Hawkins, S. Cooper, J. Sidebottom

Best: S. Cooper, T. Murray, M. Stewart, M. Reeve, G. Shaw, J. Sidebottom

Summary: The University boys held sway after an even first quarter, having appeared to settle into a structured game plan sooner than their Bean rivals. However, the side’s Achilles heel of playing less than a full four quarters returned to cost them dearly, as Hutchins rattled on 7 goals in a mid-term burst during the second stanza, while Uni struggled to pass half forward. Far from being out of the game at half-time, the Rainbows rallied in the third term, winning the stoppages, and continued the momentum in the final quarter to get within 8 points. However, the Beans did just enough hold their ground and win the big one. A shattering end for the Uni Boys, they were left to lament the lack of spark that had characterized much of their season.

                  Dear Supporter,

Welcome to the second 2007 update newsletter for the TUFC Supporters Group. The end of the Round 17 sees the Senior side maintaining fourth position (seven wins, one draw, 9 losses) on the ladder, and Reserves holding top spot on percentage (12 wins, five losses).

Both sides are set to play Finals football again, and should do well, with many quality players set to return and bolster sides in the coming weeks.
Semi-Finals will all be played at Richmond again in 2007 (Sept 8th), with the Reserves Second Semi Final starting at 10.00am, and the Seniors First Semi Final at 12.45pm

A reminder that the annual Supporters Group luncheon will be held on Saturday 25th August at the Clubrooms commencing at 1.00pm.
Come along, see Uni take on Hutchins and stay on for a few drinks at the clubrooms afterwards.

Round 9

Seniors:

University 2.1   3.6   5.8      8.12 (60)

Goals: M. Gowans 2, S. Bouwman 2, C. Jones, C. Dinely, C. Hess, D. Welch

Best: D. Welch, S. Cooper, N. Whittle, P. Brooks, C. Dinely, D. Wilcock

Summary: The Rainbows had not fared well at home against the Beans in recent times. Unfortunately, this occasion proved no exception. With Uni still holding some hope at half time, they were completely outplayed in the second half. Reserves skipper Stuart Cooper performed well in his call-up, while Dave Welch, Paul Brooks and Cody Dinely were fought hard around the middle of the ground.

Best: D. Bearman, S. Bouwman, J. Damasena, M. Gill, D. Welch, A. Hinkley

Summary: An important game to demonstrate their ability to match the top-two sides, the match developed into something of a shootout. Uni were never completely out of the game until the final quarter, when DOSA’s firepower became too much and they ran away with the contest. The backline fought hard and generated play all day, with Matt Gill making a promising return from injury.

Summary: Uni flew out of the blocks and were absolutely dominant in the first quarter. They repeated the dose in the third quarter and coasted to a comfortable victory over a side the Rainbows had not beaten easily for a long time. An all-in melee added spice to the clash. Uni’s forward guns benefited from midfield supremacy and backline dash, led by Sam Bouwman, Morgan McGuire and Dean Wilcock, while Nick Whittle was the best tall on the ground.

The game appeared to be slipping away throughout the day, until some last-quarter heroics from Cam Burgess and Chucky Jones sealed a come-from behind win.

Summary: Following the previous game’s character-building victory, hopes were high of another win to secure the Southee-Palfreyman Cup for the first time.
A close contest all day came down to the final quarter. Again, the boys showed enormous spirit to completely overrun the Beans for a memorable victory. Hutchins had no reply to Mick Gowans aerial dominance up forward, while Paul Brooks provided plenty of zip and the backline were outstanding all afternoon.

Best: S. Suitor, C. Dinely, B. Turnbull, J. Bercheree, D. Wilcock, D. Welch

Summary: DOSA showed in this match why they were equal ladder leaders. They had too many options up forward, and used an expansive approach to open up the game in the middle of the ground. The Uni boys tried hard all day, but were outclassed on this occasion. Bryce Turnbull was solid in defence, along with James Bercheree, while Shaun Suitor, Dean Wilcock and Cody Dinely worked tirelessly to generate play against the odds.

Best: S. Bouwman, L. Webb, D. Welch, P. Brooks, N. Whittle, A, Hinkley

Summary: OHA began the better of the two sides and maintained their advantage throughout the first 3 terms. Once again, an undermanned Uni roared home in the final quarter to overrun OHA and ensure finals action, whilst ending OHA’s season at the same time. Liam Webb was outstanding as a key forward target, while Sam Bouwman, Dave Welch and Nick Whittle again provided lots of drive.

Goals: C. Burgess 5, C. Haremza, P. Brooks, L. Webb, T. Stevenson
